ABOUT US

The Hinton Volunteer Department was officially chartered on February 28, 1986, by a core of 24 dedicated founding members who worked very hard to establish the organization.   The presently active members are all residents of Pickens County.

We are currently referred to as Hinton Volunteer Fire & Rescue to more accurately reflect our role in the community.  "Station 6" is one of six volunteer fire departments in Pickens County which serve the residents of our communities.   The list of volunteer fire departments, in alphabetical order, is as follows:

•   Bethany-Salem Fire Department
•   Grandview Fire Department
•   Hinton Volunteer Fire & Rescue
•   Talking Rock Fire Department
•   Tate Fire Department
•   Yellow Creek Fire Department

We volunteer approximately ten hours a week as Firefighters in addition to performing other necessary public safety duties.   In conjunction with Pickens County Rescue - which covers the entire county - Hinton Fire & Rescue covers approximately one-third of Pickens County and serves all or part of the following communities:

•   Hinton
•   Hill City
•   Jerusalem
•   Ludville
•   Talking Rock
•   Twin Tanks

Hinton Volunteer Fire & Rescue communicates with the 911 dispatcher by means of a pager system.  Each of the members carries a combination portable radio/pager tuned to a certain frequency signal.  When an emergency takes place in our area, the 911 dispatcher contacts us on our frequency, and we respond immediately to inform the dispatcher that we can take the call and are on our way.  There are times when neighboring departments pitch in.

THE STATION 6 FIREHOUSE

We are very proud of our beautiful new Station House, financed entirely by our fundraisers and donations from a grateful and appreciative community.

It also has the ability to provide storage of 200-300 cots in an event requiring disaster relief - in addition to other supplies.

It further contains separate living quarters that sleeps eight men to house volunteers who may stay overnight and man the Station on a rotation basis.
