Most internet savvy people have heard of search engines, and many have no idea just what that really means. In actuality, it's a vast subject that companies spend thousands of dollars to try and stay on top of. In reality, it's an ever-changing, ambiguous and necessary part of designing "professional" websites and web pages within those sites.

While some self-trained people can put up text and pictures on the internet and call themselves webmasters, the down side to the consumer is that most lay people have no idea if the code is poorly written 'behind the scenes'. Similarly, the walls in a house may look fine to a regular person, but behind them may lurk an inferior structure. You may never have the misfortune of discovering the truth directly -- or -- conversely, you may have problems constantly but simply not have the inside knowledge to realize why -- or how to fix them. The innocent website owner may rely on an amateur who can put up a perfectly adequate website or pages, but that owner cannot know what the real story is behind the scenes and may suffer ill marketing consequences as a result.

A website built by a true, trained professional is built with an understanding of all the components that go into making it "search engine friendly" (something we all want) and the expertise to implement proper coding to achieve that objective. This is how my websites are done.

The exact algorithms of Google, Yahoo, MSN, AOL, and the others are guarded like Fort Knox as the strictest secret. What's more, just as someone thinks or claims they have it figured out, then there is a 'shuffle' and the rules are turned on their heads.

The fact is, that through all the subterfuge and intrigue, there are basic rules of procedure that must be followed in order to be 'rewarded' by the search engines. My websites are designed and written with these rules in mind. Do not be fooled by claims that so-and-so can 'guarantee' that you will be placed in the top few listings on a search engine. Don't believe it. That's a pipe dream, and certainly 'everybody' cannot be in the top few, so that tells you something -- but that doesn't stop sales people from promising the moon and taking your money. No one can legitimately 'guarantee' a high search engine placement, and many factors beyond your control or mine factor in -- which only adds to the conundrum. What I do promise is that I design my websites in the most advantageous style possible, applying those proper techniques and codes, etc., that I referred to above. I also stay tuned to the subject online and keep informed of changes -- so you won't have to!

I offer consultation services to assess your website's coding 'behind the scenes' and will give you an objective report so you'll at know 'what you didn't know'. I can also format a coding plan for your existing pages to implement the basic sound rules. The process involves some rewriting and recoding of your pages, and it is possible that your current web person may be able to follow the format for the entire project, or going forward after the site has been redone. Alternatively -- You may choose to contract with me to implement those changes on your existing website pages. You need not change webmasters, as this service is a special project. I can work conjunction with a current webmaster to show them and explain the fixes. I have found that current webmasters can be very enthusiastic about the improvements but simply had never given any thought to the importance of proper code writing before.

COORDINATING YOUR MARKETING MEDIA

It is important to have a cohesive, coordinated marketing presence. This includes giving a consistent face to your website, print ads, stationery and business cards. Colors scheme, logos, print styles, signage -- all these need to be considered. When I design a website for a client, I always ask for copies of everything they are currently using in their ad campaigns so that the finished look is a coordinated, matching one.
